Treating arthritis with the Feldenkrais method
64
One of the less well known treatments for arthritis is a simple movement practice called the Feldenkrais method. The technique has been proven in sports science trials to be an effective long term answer to arthritis pain and there is a wealth of evidence to support these studies claims. Yet few people have heard of the method or of its beneficial effects.
The Feldenkrais method was developed by the physicist and judo expert Moshe Feldenkrais following a personal injury in childhood that reappeared in later life. Feldenkrais' severe disability prompted him to use his knowledge of physiology and exercise to develop a series of movements that treat the body's immobility as a puzzle that requires solving. Through guided movements and by encouraging introspection in the client the Feldenkrais practitioner coaxes the sufferer into adapting their movements to their new situation. By addressing the whole body rather than just the affected area the therapist seeks as holistic as possible a solution to the pain of the patient.
Although it may be hard to appreciate how such a simple practice may alleviate the excruciating pain of arthritis there is much clinical and testimonial evidence in support of the claim. One study in particular shows how twenty one arthritis sufferers all participated in a series of Feldenkrais sessions and experienced lasting pain relief. Muscular testing showed that their movements became more efficient and their muscle activity reduced. the strain on their joints was lessened, and during a two year follow up most of the participants showed signs of continued benefit.
Despite these findings Feldenkrais remains a technique on the margins of mainstream medicine. There are relatively few practitioners in the world and although more people train each year the numbers are such that therapy can only be obtained in large towns and cities. A simple yoga routine is often the preferred movement practice but generally speaking this does not usually offer the personal embodied insight that is developed during a series of feldenkrais sessions.
